So say someone randomly came up to you one day and offered you ANY super power you can think of, but you only had three seconds to choose. What would you say? I'm sure a majority would scoff and ask TIME-CONSUMING questions like "is this a joke" therefore forfeiting their power. I'm also certain a lot of people would say "ummm" also nulling the offer.
WELL. Let me tell you. I think of things like this ahead of time, so in case this scenario ever happens, I'm ready. Oh yeah, okay, go ahead. Laugh. When I have a sweet super power and you do not, don't say I didn't write a blog entry during BEDO planting the idea in your head, giving you time to think about it.
Because I am inherently lazy, I give the term "lazy sunday" a much more intense meaning. Today, for example, I rolled on the other side of my bed and woke up, and just... laid there for a good hour. I had a book within reach, a tissue to blow my nose, and my water jug. Really, as long as I didn't need to pee I could've stayed there a good while. So I read and drank water, stretched obnoxiously in that way you do on sunday afternoons, and thought about random things, the super power thing being one of them. I came to the conclusion that if offered a super power and three seconds to choose I'd pick being able to stop time. I'm not sure if I can explain how much thought went into this decision, how many other super powers were discarded. I'm just saying that I acknowledge the fact that probably NO ONE thinks this much about random crap, but at the same time I feel oddly accomplished. The ability to stop time would give me the chance to sleep as much as I wanted, ever! I could stop time after being handed an exam and ace it, every time. I could stop everything and spy on people if I have suspicions (read: I can be infinitely more creepy than I am now. Screw facebook stalking.) There are totally bad things to this, though. For instance, yeah I'd be well rested all the time, and able to get everywhere on time, but I'd get lonely. And since my choice was just for me to be able to stop time, I'd be stuck alone. Also, what if something terrible is about to happen? Like I witness a robbery or I'm about to be broken up with? I can pause that for as long as I want, but when I restart time it's still going to happen, regardless of how long I put it off.
I guess I'll randomly think about this now and then, in case I think of a better one, but for now, I'm prepared. What about you guys? What would you choose your super power to be? I'm going to try and legitimately go to bed relatively early since I have an... interesting week ahead of me. (Exam that I MUST pass wednesday, so monday and tuesday are going to be shit, but then "date" friday. fdjkgdjgdsgklsa!) I wonder if included in my stopping time request I should add fast forwarding and rewinding. Hmm. I'll save that for another sunday.
xox,
loveacrosstheocean.
Hmmm... that is tough. I am glad you brought it up now so I can think of it so that just in case someone offers this tomorrow I will be able to have my answer ready. I think I'd ask to be have wizarding powers like Harry Potter. That would be pretty awesome. I keep saying lately that it would be so nice to be able to just apparate.
ReplyDeleteSigh. I'm bored. I know! I'll go to London and watch a football match! *Pop!*
Is that cheating? I understand that means I would have a lot of powers.
I've often thought that the best superpower to have would be the ability to stop time, for exactly the reasons you said above.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I wonder though is, if you could stop time, what would happen when it started again? Could you be in a different place than when you stopped it? Would all the ink on the page you'd written unwrite itself? Would you be able to use a computer, since this requires the movement of electrons that aren't a part of your body? Would air become solid too because all the atoms freeze in place?
I think I've thought about this too much, maybe.
BTW, I found your blog off the comment you left on Emily's. And subscribed :)
This blog entry makes me smile. =]
ReplyDeleteI think time-stopping would be a pretty sweet super-power, except I agree with Elisabeth on the too-many-nitty-gritty-loop-holes thing.
Personally, I'd either like to be able to read minds or go without sleeping. If I could read minds, I'd never have to worry about saying the right thing or 'Does my date really like me?' or 'What were they just talking about when I walked in?'. And if I didn't have to sleep at night, I would have 8 hours every night to read and write. I'd have another third of life to live rather than sleeping. It would be amazing!
I think the problem with stopping time is, as good as it seems, there is a lot of things I may not want to know or see. For example, if you like someone and see that they're using their affection on someone else, it ends the game and rush. I suppose it would save a lot of time though wondering if the desire is mutual.
